Meta-Post: Forum Demographics

So I wrote a quick script to grab the listed locations of everyone on the forums so far and then did the natural thing and plotted them on a map.

It's amazing to see how diverse the crowd is: there are viewers hailing from every inhabited continent, and more are from Europe than America at the moment (either that or Americans are less likely to list their location on their profiles).

Edit: the map has been updated and now resides here: http://theinternetftw.com/hh_map/

Fun idea to visualize this!

Seems i'm the only one who represents Belgium on this forum.
I have some friends who are big fans of this series too, but apparently i'm the biggest geek of them all :P
Cool! I didn't have my location in my profile before but you prompted me to add it :)
Yes it prompted me to add my location, so run that scipt / mapping again and then I can actually say "I put Ireland on the Map". :)

There were actually two people from Belgium (and two from "just" Sweden): that map software unfortunately combines points if they're both to exactly the same location (and neither person was more specific than "Belgium".

I might end up just putting multiples in as e.g. Brussels, Bruges or whatever to get a more representative total picture.

Or write a better map instead of using a third-party (I might actually have something for this that I can steal from an old project of mine)

I plan to rerun the script in about a day after everyone who sees this thread and wants to add their location to their forum profile does so.
Whoever is from London, give us a shout, it would be nice to meet at some stage!
I'm one of those 20 guys from Argentina! Hi there : )
Use CartoDB, its easier and better. http://cartodb.com/
I suppose any string that Google Maps understands is valid to put into the location field under profile.
I updated my location so it's more specific.
Just updated the map (and moved most of the work to cartodb, which was a great idea).

Nice! Can't believe there are so few of us in the SF Bay Area! I'm hoping it's because my neighbors here are just shy about sharing location and not that we're all too busy writing JavaScript to tune in to HH :)

Can't access the page. Probably crashed from all the people storming to view it, or it might be powered by too much JavaScript.
@Uberstedt, after testing people in IRC I think the problem is with my map provider's CDN. In places it doesn't expect people to be it doesn't seem too reliable.

I have a googlemaps version that should probably work everywhere. I'll switch to it if I keep getting these reports. In the meantime try refreshing the page multiple times. That seemed to convince the CDN to get their act together for others.
