"What's New in CPUs Since the 80s... How Does It Affect Programmers?" covers some of the new features in CPUs during the last few decades, including some things that Casey already mentioned once or twice (TLBs, SIMD, RDTSC). I think it's an interesting read, especially for those of us (including me) that aren't very familiar with that kind of low-level programming.
